the tempermentals

one of the things people loved most about my old blog was when i wrote about my celebrity encounters. and while most of them were hilarious and involved things like dancing with richard simmons in penn station or being given dirty looks by barry williams in the basement of a rundown comedy club in times square, sometimes i actually get to meet people that i truly admire. this is one of those occasions.

a couple of weeks ago, my friend paul asked me if i wanted to go with him to see a play called the tempermentals, starring michael urie (marc from ugly betty - one of my favorite shows). so we went. and the play was really beautiful. i won't go into all the details (you can check out this great nyt piece for that) but i will say that the play was incredibly moving and the message was so powerful and poignant. it's a love story, it's an activist story, and it's a very human story that was both well written and acted.

after the show, paul and i hung around the lobby area in the hopes of meeting michael. and for once, i was actually nervous. so when michael came over to us and said to paul, "paul! it's so nice to see you! i'm so glad that you could make it!" i nearly passed out. i can only imagine what i must have looked like with my jaw on the floor. i couldn't figure out how they knew each other and why paul didn't tell me. after a few seconds, paul started laughing and explained that he had randomly met michael the night before at a different event and had asked him to help play a trick on me by pretending that he knew paul. and he did it! hilarious! and then michael stood around with us and chatted for awhile. and he was so nice. lord only knows what i said to him - it really could be any number of things - but i do know that i told him what a comedic genius i think he is. and i really do...if you don't watch ugly betty, get it together! seriously. it's so good! anyway, paul also took a couple of pictures of the two of us (which came out so much better than the one he took of me with tori spelling...a story for another day). i love the first one so much - it is so typically me.

 go and see the tempermentals! the run has been extended through august 23rd. it's not to be missed!
